The Caring House Project - Volunteering in Haiti

SUNSET began participating in Frank McKinney’s Caring House Project in 2013 when Sunset Buildings owner, Tom Ford and Construction Manager Reuben Yoder traveled to Haiti to help build homes for the homeless. That year SUNSET donated a total of four homes to desperately poor and devastated families in the country of Haiti.

I had a great experience with Sunset Buildings. Dariel helped me build out my shed with all of the specs that I wanted... and helped me keep to my budget. The pricing was the best I could find when comparing to Home Depot and Tuff Shed, as well as other local companies. The pricing included delivery and building of the shed on-site and it also included the foundation and roofing. Most sheds you get are DIY and you have to do all of that on your own. Sunset also includes a warranty and are there for you for any issues. I really appreciate that they are a locally owned family business and I was very happy to support that. Sunset Sheds did an incredible job moving a 10 x 20 shed for me in the Denver area. I bought the shed on Marketplace... but needed someone to move it. Sunset was one of 3 other shed movers I reached out to. Sunset's communication and personnel (office staff and their shed mover guy) were head and shoulders above others I reached out to and their pricing was reasonable. I was impressed with the shed moving equipment they brought (their trailer and the "Mule") and their expertise in getting the shed in and out of some tricky, narrow places. My wife and I had a 10x10 shed built on our property. And since our property is not very level... Sunset recommended a... contractor (Chris) who could come out and build a foundation for us. He did a great job. The entire process went very smooth from walking through the Sunset yard and talking to the salesperson to get ideas as to what would we really wanted, or needed. Then when it came time to order the shed, the salesperson went order the contract in detail (which I really liked). After we ordered the shed and put down the deposit I made the decision to have Sunset Paint the shed (instead of me). So there was a change order... and they handled that professionally too. They sent out a 3 person crew that setup the shed and then a few days later the painter came out and painted the shed. It looks FANTASTIC!! We couldn't be happier.read more

The 12' X 20' chalet-style building that Sunset put up for us in 2015 near Westcliffe is still doing great nine years... later. We have since fully finished the exterior and interior, along the lines of a fully insulated Swiss refuge hut--with front and rear lofts. We laid our own foundation stones and added two 18" earth anchors in each corner, in addition to the "hurricane straps" joining walls and roof joists. Even with periodic gale force winds, it has not moved a centimeter, and it remains precisely plumb and level. It serves primarily as storage for tools and recreational equipment, but also makes a nice summer camping support building.read more

Terrible communication, no confidence in this business We will start off by saying when it’s all said and done, we... are satisfied with our 8’x20’ shed. The actual builders and painters did a great job. We are pleased with their work. Our concerns stem solely from the massive lack of communication from the Sunset Shed project management and sales team. The process was sold to us as very streamlined and simple. It was not. Long story short, our builders came nearly three hours late from their scheduled window, which was already rescheduled once. Zero communication from Sunset. We had to make two phone calls to check the status. The builders didn’t have our door, said they’d come back first thing Monday morning. This is a Friday afternoon, why couldn't they fix it the next day, and fix their mistake of forgetting the door, and coming three hours late, and not leaving enough time to finish the job? My husband called and visited in-person first thing Saturday morning. Sunset Sheds returns our call later that day, wires crossed AGAIN and said they’d be out Monday afternoon. We had already moved our work schedules around AGAIN and were very frustrated that the right hand never seemed to know what the left hand was doing. We felt like a low priority as soon as the first deposit was made. This was a $7,000 expense for us, and not one person in the business made us feel like we should’ve spent a dime. We never heard one apology or attempt to make things right from anyone. We never heard a peep from anyone at the management level, period. Hindsight is 20/20, but we should’ve followed our gut after witnessing a couple red flags at the beginning of the sales process. We still proceeded because we gave grace to human mistakes and wanted to support a local business rather than Lowe’s. Simple communication would’ve solved everything. We have zero confidence in Sunset Sheds and will never work with them again.read more

The entire team was phenomenal, from the gentleman who assisted me in the purchase of the garden barn shed to the crew... that came out to deliver and build it on site. Went today to look at some sheds. Was greeted by Dariel. Dariel was very knowledgeable about the various types of sheds... available and very polite. They've got a bunch of model sheds to view in all the sizes + add ons like doors, windows, paint, ramp, shelf, loft, different doors, etc. Was good to be able to walk inside each one and feel it out in person. There are a lot of customizable aspects, and I was impressed by how the different materials and vents could reduce the heat inside today. Was really looking for something to jam out in away from the house and need the temperature somewhat controlled for gear and general comfort. These are a lot bigger and more formidable than others I've seen at home depot or Lowe's or Amazon online. I'm still considering this a long term project for the future, but now I know where I'll be going when I'm ready. Thanks for taking the time to show me everything today!read more

I had a garage built by Sunset. I'd rate them a two except a couple of the corners are sort of square!. The "man... door's" top corner extended past the top off the jamb about 3/4 of an inch, when complained Kay said it was not an inspection item, so not corrected. The door didn't latched so I had to shim it to latch. The garage door was "offset" and required the installer to come out three times to get parts to have it to close OK. One truss was missing a truss connector. One corner is 'recessed' and needs about a quarter inch shim to install the dry wall semi- flat. The wall studs have crowns, the are placed so the crowns are opposite of each other which results in wavy walls. Kay recommends 'Gary's Concrete" which I would not have set a fence post. The floor is not flat, a two foot square bench requires almost an inch of shims to keep in from rocking, there are numerous places simular to that. One wall has a place that extends past the building siding about a quarter of an inch. Gary was short about two yards of concrete, so he scraped concrete from the rest of the floor to sort of full in the hole, this resulted in the waves in the floor. He added water to the mix, which created shrinkage cracks. If you would like to see crappie work, contact me.read more

I want to support the local business over the big box store when it makes sense. In this case I would say buyer... beware. I designed a custom shed for my yard nearly 3 months ago and it is still not complete. The list of problems is long but I can narrow them down to sloppy attention to detail, laissez-faire attitude (not really giving an S) and failure to follow up to complete the job. I should have walked away when I initially went to spec out the shed and one of the employees completely berated a younger gentlemen who was working with another customer right in front of me. I was told after giving my deposit check that it would be a month until the structure could be installed. Time came and went and as the day approached I was frantically called three different times to reschedule. I was told the windows were not 'in yet', in truth they were never ordered. I know this because I still do not have the windows. Install was a completely unprofessional job. I showed the installer the way to get the materials to the back yard and instead he went through a very small area with large pine trees and a travel trailer and dropped them off the side of a retaining wall. This not only damaged my trees, it also scratched the walls of the shed. Finally, to add insult the installer placed the shed too close to my fence so now the door does not open all the way. I am still waiting for 1) windows, 2) the shed to me placed in the appropriate spot, 3) the structure to be painted. Overall terrible experience. The only reason I am giving two stars is because the design of the building came out well and if it is ever done I will be happy with it behind my home.read more

I recently had a large garage built by Sunset. 24X30. Kay was amazing and made navigating the whole process easy. She... laid out the options and helped me get the most features possible within my budget. I was particularly happy with the storage loft trusses and 10 foot ceilings. The concrete work is done by a separate contractor which you will need to hire separately from Sunset. Kay has a list of people she works with. I chose Gary with NNR Enterprises. They did excellent work and I will be hiring them for additional concrete work in the future. Just be advised that the concrete is a separate bill and not part of Sunset's price and you will have to work with them as a contractor. I think it might be helpful if Sunset were able to offer a "turn key" package for their customers. Not a big deal to me, but might be to others. The framing crew was very fast and did quality work. No missed nails, out of square openings, or other problems. A skilled and efficient crew of four women started with a bare concrete slab at noon on Monday and by noon on Friday, the building inspector had signed off on the garage. Very happy with the work they did. The only problems were things that were out of Kay's control. It did take a little longer to get started than I would have liked, but it would have been the same with any builder. There are issues, industry wide, with availability of materials and labor which caused the delay. Kay informed me of the situation upfront, so I am not in any way disappointed with her or Sunset. I wholeheartedly recommend Sunset to anyone.read more

Great experience with Sunset! From my first outreach to Mina not really knowing what I could do or what I wanted, to... the fast work our building team Chris, Joe and Reagan made of the job, we are super happy! Mina even did the legwork on the shed the previous owner took with them to see what was there - it was fantastic and she communicated with me along the way. As for the quick work of the shed, it was up in a day. Only had finishing touches on day two. Chris and Joe were always professional and even put up with me watching from time to time. Chris’s service dog Reagan was there the entire time and he was super sweet and very docile for his size. But he made himself right at home and came by for scratches and pets each time I came out. Jeremy and his small crew were very professional and quick. I love my new shed, it feels like a mini house behind my house. 1. When someone at the company said things will be done (finish the roof) and nothing happens, I consider this a... significant issue. Doing what you say goes a long way. 2. At the beginning of this process, The customer service rep Kay was unnecessarily rude to me and my wife which is completely unacceptable. 3. The coordination between the actual construction crews and the customer services seems to be lacking and makes for a drawn out project. This applies to internal company crews and external support crews. 4. My wife and I received a final bill that stated all work had been completed on Dec 15th. The garage is still missing a roof, a door, and a garage door. The work is nowhere close to completed and the final inspection has not been scheduled. Today is December 19th. Overall, I am dissatisfied with the process and recommend others to seek out other operations for this type of work. **I did speak with company rep. Nina today about the issue today. We hired Sunset Sheds to move a pretty large custom built shed from our neighbors yard to ours. From the start, they... were professional (even though they were probably a bit skeptical it could be done safely), and told us they'd give it a shot. Their one-man shed-moving crew, John, came to the jobsite and went above and beyond to overcome obstacles and safely move the shed into its new location. Good service and well made buildings. and the service never stops. Had a tree fall on my shed, called Dariel to find... out what kind of singles were on. Her was very helpful and told me the way to repair the roof. When i could not find singles he again went out of his way and found a person and some singles to fix my roof. And all of this happened just before the big snow so I saved the contents. This is quality work and quality people who are all about service.read more

Sunset builds a great shed! The crazy wind storm we had last winter ripped my old tin shed to shreds. My wife & I... went out that day to look at sheds since the high winds would also possibly show weaknesses of the sheds at the builders that were outside. After comparing various builders in our area, including Tuff Sheds, Sunset clearly had the best deal & strongest shed for the price, and there was not a sign of any damage to any of their sheds in the lot despite the 100 MpH winds that day. For the same cost as the others you get better materials and expert workmanship performed by a local business, not a chain. After completing my shed, I realized my mower high-centered going from the ramp into the building. Sunset came back out and built a longer ramp at only the difference in cost for the longer boards. The building is great looking & very solid. The builders were all polite, professional, and highly skilled. Thank you Sunset Buildings for a fantastic product and a great experience all around!read more
