Superior Foundations
Storage Sheds
You may already know that one of the most important components of a storage shed is its foundation. This is because everything else is built off of it, should anything be wrong with the foundation the entire shed will be wrong. However, when shopping for storage sheds most people don’t really know what to look for, or how to compare what shed will ultimately be a better investment; lasting for years to come. To help out, we have found that there are 3 foundation elements that can considerably affect the life of your storage shed.
Floor Joists
Floor joists are the beams that support the flooring in most structures. This is what gives strength to floor allowing it to support weight. Unlike most of our competitors that place floor joists for their storage sheds 24 inches apart, SUNSET places their floor joists 16 inches apart on Classic and Dura models. Utilizing a greater number of floor joists positioned closer together gives the flooring on our storage sheds superior strength. Joists positioned further apart than 16 inches is more likely to flex, resulting in stress on the sheds foundation, while weakening the actual flooring and causing any sealant to begin peeling off.
Built on Site
In addition to allowing easier access to backyards without having to remove fencing, building storage sheds on site can significantly benefit the sheds foundation. This is because it eliminates any stress that would occur on the foundation in transport, while also allowing builders to properly level the foundation in its surroundings. If not done carefully with the appropriate equipment attempting to move an entire storage shed can cause a foundation to become significantly weaker. Leveling an entire storage shed is also much more difficult than only leveling a sheds foundation before the walls and roof are added. Builders can simply lift or move the foundation to make adjustments to the level and the result is usually much more accurate than leveling an entire storage shed. Not having the structure properly level will focus weight and stress into a specific area and result in a shorter life of the shed.
Skids
Unlike most of our competitors, we utilize skids on all of our storage sheds. Skids are 4×4 beams that are fastened to the bottom of the shed for multiple benefits. First, skids raise the floor joists off of the ground keeping them away from moisture to eliminate swelling that weakens the foundation. Second, skids provide a great amount of support, ensuring that the shed is always square. Finally, skids provide a strong surface to move the storage shed without affecting the integrity of the flooring. SUNSET always uses pressure-treated 4×4 skids that repel moisture for superior strength and longer life of our storage sheds.
